Mechanical HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical (MEP) systems

Mechanical HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing systems design is RNK’s ace in the hole.

MEP helps RNK keep outstanding from current market and it involves careful planning and adherence to engineering principles compliance application:

  • Understand the OBC and familiarize with relevant sections related to mechanical systems, energy efficiency, and air quality, particularly Parts 3, 6, 7 and 9
  • Employ methodologies such as CSA F280, HRAI worksheets, or ASHRAE guidelines to determine heating and cooling loads, which take into account factors like climate zone, the R-values of building envelope materials, occupant activities, and comfort preferences etc.
  • Establish ventilation rates based on OBC and ASHRAE 62.1, ensuring adequate outdoor airflow and mechanical ventilation as necessary. Design ductwork for proper sizing and insulation, minimizing bends to enhance efficiency
  • Choose compliant HVAC equipment that meets energy efficiency standards for various systems to reach thermal comfort, covering temperature, humidity, and air movement.
  • Fire Safety Considerations to ensure ducting and systems meet fire safety standards, including fire dampers and smoke control
  • Determine Fire alarming system types: Manual Activation on pull stations or Automatic Detection Systems upon smoke and heat detectors per Ontario Fire Code and Ontario Building Code
  • Response with audible and visible devices throughout entire building on alarm notification and safe evacuation
  • Ensure potable water systems, backflow prevention, and compliance water quality standards; use water-efficient fixtures and systems to support sustainability and comply with water conservation guidelines
  • Design sanitary drainage and storm water management with correct materials: Copper, PVC, PEX, and Cast Iron
  • Properly size drainage pipes based on fixture units, slope, and length
  • Site servicing collaboration with local municipal infrastructures, connection to water main, sanitary sewer drain, storm water management and more
  • Integrate controls for optimizing HVAC operation, including smart thermostats and Building Automation System
  • Conduct post-installation testing to confirm system performance

It is commendable that those major projects, like GTA Pearson airport, UTM (University of Toronto Mississauga Campus), Sick Kids Hospital, Durham Courthouse etc. and so on, contributed to RNK’s growth and align with Canadian experiences.
